By Luki, a GNFI contributor in Phnom Penh City, Cambodia Indonesian musicians? Hoooahm... Always talk about love with boring lyrics and pussy singing style. What can we about them then? Well, if you are one of those who have that kind of perception, please listen to this: Superman Is Dead (SID), a brilliant punk rock band from Bali island who started their career through underground and Indie label community and eventually hired by Sony BMG Indonesia, will be rockin' 16 different cities in the U.S. start from 26 June – 9 July 2009, which means they are ongoing now! The band is officially chosen to represent Asia (dude, represent ASIA) on Vans Warped Tour 2009, one of the biggest music festivals in the U.S. which involves numerous well known punk rock bands such as, NOFX, Green Day, The Offspring, etc. In total, there are 100 bands participating.

“From Bali With Rock” picked up to be the label name of their tour program in order to promote Bali, Indonesia, and surely Indonesian music to the U.S. public. SID is awarded to be the first Indonesian and the second Asian band who are qualified to participate on this hilarious tour. Previously, a band from China has preceded them to take part on the tour. “This is the achievement which we’ve dreamed about and a stepping stone to open the heart of our music industry to be fairer to alternative music art” said Bobby Cool, the SID vocalist. Artist Senior Director and Repertoire of Sony BMG Indonesia, Jan Djuhana expresses his pride of SID marvelous achievement in international scale. “SID is our pride since they will represent Indonesia in an international tour and be placed together with some punk rock legends like NOFX, Green Day, and The Offspring”. Big applause and two thumbs up for SID! Beside SID, last year, an indie label metal band from Bandung, Burgerkill, has also succeeded to be the only Asian band to take part in The Invasion Of Noise, one of biggest rock festivals in Australia. Noxa, another indie label metal band from Jakarta has also proudly become the first Asian band to rock Tuska Metal Festival in Helsinki, Finland in 2008. This left a question, “Are the successful artists who are able to win abroad viewers heart always from rock, alternative or metal genre?” The answer is no! Please remember Anggun C. Sasmi, who might be the first Indonesian pop artist who gain massive international success and presently do her music career in France. Or we can recall to 4 years back when Centralismo, an indie label album from a Jakarta pop jazz retro style band named Sore was awarded by Time Magazine Asia to be one of 5 Asia Albums Worth Buying 2005. “It’s an album perfect for those rainy days when all you really want to do is lie back and dream of a simpler time in your life” (Time, September 12, 2005). In 2008, Time Asia again awarded Goodnight Electric, an indie label electronic pop group from Jakarta as one of 5 Asian Acts to Watch in 2008. Whatever, for you who still owned an perception that Indonesian artists are boring, please listen to the artists above. And for you who are looking for an alternative to the Indonesian mainstream music, there are numbers of highly worth listening Indie label artists (as mentioned above) and many others like Pure Saturday, Efek Rumah Kaca, White Shoes and The Couple Company, Float, Koil, Mocca, The Brandals, Rocket Rockers, etc.
