Indonesia will nominate Surabaya and Palembang  to compete for a new Asean "green city" award this year,  Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said Monday at a workshop on the country’s home grown green Adipura awards. Gusti said the new Asean program to reward progress on environmental protection is inspired by the Adipura competition, which rewards Indonesian cities for environmental progress. The Asean competition is due to begin later this year. "We [Indonesia] will recommend Surabaya and Palembang [South Sumatra] as strong candidates. We are still preparing," said Gusti, adding that Palembang had already been put forward for similar international awards. Masnellyarti Hilman, deputy minister for natural resources conservation, said that this was the first such initiative from Asean and the ministry is preparing to meet the challenge. The Adipura awards began in 1996 as an annual program of the Ministry of the Environment to assess cities that managed waste wisely. The program was suspended from 1998 to 2002 over protests that the program had done nothing to improve cities. In 2003, the Environment Ministry relaunched the Adipura awards with a broader spatial planning, water pollution management and clean public facilities.
