Two Indonesian university students have won an international award for diplomacy at the Harvard World Model United Nations in Singapore. Dyah Ayunico Ramadhani and Indah Gilang, who study international relations at the University of Indonesia, were awarded the Best Diplomacy Award for their outstanding enthusiasm and for best embodying the spirit of diplomacy. The 20th Harvard World Model United Nations was held in Singapore this year, marking its 20th anniversary. The conference is organized each year by Harvard in collaboration with universities from all over the world. This year, more than 2,200 students from 400 universities from 65 countries attended the conference. The model UN is a simulation of the workings of the international organization in which students represent different countries and study their position on different issues. Dyah represented Oman in the Organizations of the Islamic Conference [OIC]. During the conference, Dyah was challenged to answer a question on internet censorship in Islamic countries and its effects on development in the Islamic world. “I am fascinated on how delegations from all over the world, with different cultural backgrounds and religions were united to realize the spirit of Islam in responding to the topic in OIC,” Dyah said, as quoted by news portal Detik.com. Dyah has represented her university in several world events. The most recent was the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) held in Botswana from Dec. 27, 2010 to Jan. 4, 2011. Meanwhile, Indah Gilang represented Oman in the World Trade Organization. She said it was not easy to win the award because her question on obstacles to agricultural trade was challenging. “I acted as an Omani diplomat. As a small country in the Middle East of which most of the population work in agricultural industry and the country itself is rich in oil, Oman must be brave to challenge big countries pushing for trade protection,” Indah said.
