COLOMBO, KOMPAS.com - The evening in Colombo on Wednesday was engrossed with energy of excellent talented artists from the Yogyakarta City, Indonesia. It has been an evening of celebration of artistic creativity and also the advanced relationship between Indonesia and Sri Lanka through presentation of traditional performing arts from selected Provinces in Indonesia. The performance is part of the music and dance performance series under “the Goodwill Visit of Indonesian Cultural Troupe to Sri Lanka” on 6-9 September 2011. The Cultural Troupe consists of 43 dancers and musicians civitas academica of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts – Yogyakarta, led by Prof. AM Hermien Kusmayati, the Rector. A total of approximately 1450 Sri Lankans, including Honorable TB Ekanayake, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Arts; Indonesians in Sri Lanka and diplomatic representations fill up the Auditorium in Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall to enjoy the performance of nine items. Signature dances staged in the evening include the royal dance “Bedhaya Wiwaha Sangaskara”, the vigorous stomp dance “Sesorengan”, the comical marching dance “Nirboyo”, the famous line dance “Saman”, and the theatrical dance “Kecak Kesambut Sita”. They represent values that Indonesians hold dear, namely vivacity, friendliness and harmony. The traditional music or “Karawitan” has been staged as a concert of “Gamelan” Javanese music instrument played to accompany compositions, or Gending. Observing the codes of smooth, elegant engagement, the “Karawitan” musicians present the loud composition “Gending Nglantak”, the melodious composition “Gending Dayinta”, and the pleasant delicate composition “Gending Ladrang”. They even play a composition inspired by “Surangani”, a popular Sri Lankan song with fast and lively rhythm. This Cultural Performance is held to introduce some of the rich traditional artistic expressions in Indonesia. The dances and music compositions are deliberately selected to represent the traditional performing arts from the Provinces of Yogyakarta, Central Java, Eastern Java, Aceh and Bali. Furthermore, the Performance is staged to further promote mutual understanding and people-to-people contact between Indonesia and Sri Lanka. On Tuesday evening, the troupe performed before around 450 audiences in the main performing hall of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts-Colombo, co-hosted by the Indonesian Ambassador HE Djafar Husein and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Jayasena Kottegoda. In addition with the traditional Indonesians dances and music, some traditional Sri Lankan dances and music were staged by the undergraduate and graduate students of the university. The Troupe also had a great time in a dance workshop presented by senior professors and seasoned artists of the University, and explored potential scopes of inter-university cooperation in a bilateral discussion. The delegation of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts was lead by Prof. Kusmayati, while the delegation of the University was lead by Prof. Kottegoda. After entertaining Colombo on 6-7 September 2011, the Troupe, having traveled to 9 countries now, will stage another exclusive cultural performance in Galle on Thursday evening. The Indonesian Ambassador and the Governor of Southern Province, Madam Kumari Balasuriya, will co-host the performance in Hall de Galle, situated inside the Galle Fort, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The performance is planned to entertain an audience of about 500 people from the City. The Troupe will return to Colombo to carry out Indonesian Batik workshop on Friday. Almost 80 participants will learn to make Batik patterns with Canting and wax on linens in the Indonesian Embassy. Before visiting Colombo this year, the well-traveled Troupe had a number of successful performances overseas in these recent six years, including in Lisbon, Budapest, Cairo, Beijing, Taiwan, Tokyo, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.
