"Wonderful" Gamelan Festival held in Newcastle, United Kingdom.
Citizens of Newcastle and Gateshead, United Kingdom, were treated to the richness of traditional Indonesian music and culture when the “Gathering of Northern Gamelans (GONG) Festival 2011: Indonesia Celebrates” was held on Saturday 16th of July 2011. The event capped off a month-long series of activities that included gamelan workshops & concerts, shadow-puppet (wayang) presentations, traditional dance performances, and Indonesian martial arts (pencak silat) demonstrations. Despite the bad weather, the festival was attended by many local fans of Indonesian music and culture from the Newcastle and Gateshead area in northern England, including families who brought their young children along. Organized by the Gamelan at Play Community Interest Company and supported by the Indonesian Embassy in London, the festival commemorated 200 years of historical ties between Indonesia and the United Kingdom which began when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first set foot on the Indonesian archipelago in 1811. The event was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador, Mr Yuri Oktavian Thamrin and the local mayor, Mr Joe Mitchinson, who opened proceedings with a reception. Mayor Joe Mitchinson expressed his hope that the festival would become an annual event in the city whilst Ambassador Yuri Oktavian Thamrin expressed his hope that the event would raise awareness of Indonesia’s traditions and culture in the area. Asked by an Indonesian reporter about the festival and the various performances on display, Mayor Joe Mitchinson responded, “It's a Wonderful Performance.” News souce: Republika Online https://www.republika.co.id/berita/senggang/seni-budaya/11/07/17/logij7-ramayana-hipnotis-masyarakat-newcastle and KBRI London https://www.kemlu.go.id/london/Pages/Embassies.aspx?IDP=212&l=id Translated and re-written in Good News From Indonesia by Ibrahim Al-Muttaqi
