RI students grab medals in int'l astronomy Olympiad

Three Indonesian high school students won two silver and one bronze medal in the 5th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Katowice and Krakow, Poland, last week. Indonesia's National Education Ministry announced in a press statement on Tuesday that Ko Mathias Adrian from SMAN 5 Bekasi state high school in West Java and Raymond Djajalaksana from SMK Penabur vocational school in Jakarta each won a silver medal, while M. Wildan Ghafari from SMA Semesta in Semarang grabbed a bronze. A total of 134 participants from 26 countries took part in the contest, to which Indonesia sent five students, including Miftahul Hilmi from SMAN 1 Gresik state high school in East Java and James Lim from SMK Petra Surabaya vocational school. The students were joined at the competition in Poland by Hakim L. Malasan and Mohammad Ikbal from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Outside the contest, ITB lecturer Chatief Kunjaya was also elected as the president of the IOAA for the 2012 – 2016 period, while Poland's Grzegorz Stachowski was appointed secretary-general, tribunnews.com reported
